The gallbladder is a small organ that stores bile and releases it during meals to support digestion. First, the doctor examines the gallbladder while you are fasting, assessing its size, walls, and contents. You then eat a meal that stimulates bile release. After some time, the doctor examines the gallbladder again to see whether it has contracted normally, insufficiently, or not at all.

This examination can help explain persistent heaviness and discomfort, even when routine test results are normal. It can reveal gallbladder motility problems, bile stagnation, and functional issues associated with gallstones or chronic inflammation. These changes can only be identified by observing the gallbladder as it contracts.

When should you consider this examination?

A gallbladder function ultrasound may be recommended if you experience heaviness after fatty meals, a bitter taste in your mouth, or discomfort on the right side of your abdomen. It can also be useful as a preventive examination for those who want to monitor their digestive health.
