Breast ultrasound

Breast ultrasound

A breast ultrasound is a safe examination that helps assess breast tissue and detect changes early.

During the scan, the doctor examines the structure of the breast tissue, milk ducts, and lymph nodes, checking for cysts, lumps, and signs of inflammation.

Breast ultrasound does not use radiation, is painless, and can be repeated as often as medically necessary.

It is particularly useful for women under 40, whose breast tissue tends to be denser. After age 40, ultrasound is usually combined with mammography. The most appropriate examination depends on your age, symptoms, and individual risk factors.

When should you have a breast ultrasound?

This examination may be recommended if you experience breast pain, notice a lump, observe changes in breast shape, or have nipple discharge, redness, or swelling. It can also be used to monitor previously identified cysts or other findings, before starting hormone therapy, when planning a pregnancy, or whenever recommended by your doctor.
