Digestive health: more than just food

The stomach, intestines and liver are often seen as a separate system responsible only for digesting food. In reality, the digestive tract interacts closely with the nervous, immune and hormonal systems.

When digestion is disrupted, symptoms may go beyond bloating or heartburn. Fatigue, anxiety, skin concerns and changes in wellbeing can sometimes be connected with digestive health.

Many people get used to feeling “slightly unwell” all the time: heaviness after meals, irregular bowel movements or suspected food intolerances. These symptoms are often blamed on a busy lifestyle, poor environment or genetics. But persistent discomfort is worth discussing with a doctor rather than accepting as normal.

Causes are not always obvious

Digestive symptoms can have many possible causes. They may be related to diet, stress, medications, infections, food intolerances or conditions affecting the stomach, intestines, liver, thyroid or other body systems.

For example, chronic stress can influence the gut-brain connection, affecting bowel motility and sensitivity. Hormonal changes may also affect digestion and bowel habits throughout the menstrual cycle, during pregnancy or menopause.

This is why diet changes or over-the-counter medication may bring temporary relief but not always address the reason symptoms persist.

An integrative approach: seeing the whole picture

When working with patients who have digestive concerns, I do not prescribe one universal list of tests or a standard diet.

As a gynaecologist and nutrition specialist, I often see that digestive symptoms can coexist with menstrual irregularities, fertility concerns or recurrent vaginal infections. These conditions do not always have the same cause, but considering the full picture can help identify factors that require attention.

Depending on your symptoms and medical history, we may discuss nutrition, stress, sleep, bowel habits, menstrual-cycle patterns, medication use and relevant test results.

Why recovery takes time

The body does not change in one day. Treating only a symptom, whether it is heartburn, constipation or pain, may not be enough if there is an underlying condition or several contributing factors.

A careful assessment helps us understand what may have started the problem, which habits or health factors are maintaining it, and what realistic steps can support recovery over time.

If you are tired of guessing

When digestive symptoms take too much of your energy and standard recommendations do not bring lasting relief, it may be time to look deeper.

During a consultation, we do not simply review your diet. We explore why your body may be sending these signals and determine whether further examination, medical treatment or individual nutrition and lifestyle recommendations are needed.

There are no magic solutions in one appointment. But a thoughtful, individual approach can help you better understand your body and move towards more stable digestive health.
